Dollar General Corporation has agreed to pay $28.5 million as part of a class action settlement over allegations that it engaged in deceptive marketing practices related to its auto motor oil products.
The dollar general motor oil 5w20 is a settlement that Dollar General has reached with the Department of Justice in regards to allegations that they overcharged customers for motor oil.

Dollar General Corp. and other defendants have agreed to pay $28.5 million to customers who bought DG Auto motor lubricants.
Anyone residing in the United States who bought any of the following DG Auto motor oils for personal use only, not for resale, between September 1, 2010 and December 31, 2017 is a member of the Class:
- For use in cars built after 1988, DG SAE 10W-30 (SF standard).
- For use in cars built after 1988, DG SAE 10W-40 (SF standard).
- For use in cars built after 1930, DG SAE 30 (SA standard).
Class members who submit a valid claim form will be eligible to receive up to $16.80 in reimbursement without providing evidence of purchase.
According to a class action complaint, the defendants fraudulently promoted and sold outdated DG Auto motor lubricants that may damage cars.
Refunds and property damage compensation are available to members of the class.
Depending on whether they have evidence of purchase, Class Members may be eligible for a full or partial refund.
Those who submit a valid claim form for a partial refund without evidence of purchase may get $1.68 per quart up to a maximum of $16.80 for up to 10 quarts of DG Auto motor oil bought.
One partial refund claim per household is allowed.
Class members who can provide evidence of purchase may file a claim for a full refund, including the price they paid for DG Auto motor oil.
It is not possible for customers to submit claims for both partial and full refunds.
Those who wish to make a claim for property damage allegedly caused by the covered DG Auto motor oils must fill out a claim form and attach supporting documents.
The Class Member will be entitled for the following cash compensation, based on the vehicle’s mileage, provided the claim is filed with an affidavit from an ASE-certified mechanic:
- If the vehicle was model year 2010 or later and had fewer than 100,000 miles on it when the engine damage happened, you may be eligible for up to $2,250 in compensation.
- If the vehicle was manufactured between 2000 and 2009, had between 100,001 and 200,000 miles on it at the time the engine was destroyed, or met one of the above requirements but not both, you may get up to $1,250.
- If the claim does not satisfy the requirements of the first two categories but otherwise qualifies, it may be worth up to $750.
According to the mileage of the vehicle, those who file a property damage claim without an affidavit from an ASE-certified technician will be entitled to the following:
- If the vehicle was model year 2010 or later and had fewer than 100,000 miles on it when the engine was destroyed, you may be eligible for up to $500 in compensation.
- If the vehicle was model year 2000-2009, had between 100,001 and 200,000 miles on it at the time the engine was destroyed, or met one of those requirements but not both, you may be eligible for up to $350.
- If the claim does not satisfy the requirements of the first two categories but otherwise qualifies, it may be worth up to $250.
In addition to the monetary relief, Dollar General has committed to cease selling outdated DG Auto motor oils and increase supervision of its automotive goods’ quality and labeling standards.
On June 22, 2021, a final approval hearing will be held.
Class members who want to opt out of the DG Auto oil settlement or object to it must do so by May 10, 2021.
By June 8, 2021, claims for refund benefits must be filed.
The deadline to make a claim for property damage compensation is August 23, 2021.
