According to a new national class action complaint, Johnson & Johnson’s OGX-brand shampoos and conditioners, which are advertised to nurture and smooth your hair, actually include a mix of chemicals that cause substantial hair loss.

Plaintiff Larissa Whipple filed a class action complaint against Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. in federal court in Illinois on Monday, claiming state and federal law breaches.

Whipple claims she purchased OGX shampoo and conditioner after being misled by Johnson & Johnson’s “false promise” that they will smooth, nourish, soften, mend, and revitalize her hair.

What wasn’t mentioned is that OGX hair products include a chemical or combination of substances that, when used properly, causes substantial hair loss and scalp discomfort, she claims.

According to Whipple, “at least one component in the Products, DMDM hydantoin, is a formaldehyde donor known to slowly leak formaldehyde when it comes into touch with water.”

“Formaldehyde is a well-known human carcinogen that, when absorbed via the skin, may cause cancer and other adverse reactions.”

According to the OGX products class action complaint, Johnson & Johnson has been using DMDM hydantoin as a preservative in its products for well over a decade. It claims, however, that using DMDM hydantoin as a preservative is unnecessary since safer natural alternatives are available.

According to the OGX shampoo complaint, “as a result, the Products are made hazardous and unsafe for sale as over-the-counter hair smoothing shampoo products.”

Whipple claims that despite knowing the hazards, Johnson & Johnson failed to adequately warn customers about the consequences of putting such a powerful chemical on their hair and scalp.

The OGX shampoo class action claims that “Defendant continued to conceal the dangers of the Products by failing to appropriately and fully recall the Products, by continuing to claim the Products were safe when properly applied, and by failing to warn consumers of the dangers attendant to the Products’ use.”

Johnson & Johnson, on the other hand, claims that OGX hair products include unique ingredients that nourish and revitalize damaged or dry hair. She claims that the fraudulent misrepresentations have caused her hair loss and scalp discomfort, as have thousands of other consumers.

Whipple is seeking to represent everyone who purchased OGX shampoo and conditioner products in the United States, as well as a consumer fraud multistate subclass and an Illinois subclass.

She is seeking certification of the class action, damages, restitution, an injunction, a recall of all OGX hair products, and a jury trial for violations of state consumer fraud acts, Illinois consumer laws, and unjust enrichment.

Johnson & Johnson is a well-known American multinational company that is responsible for a wide range of consumer goods, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals that can be found on shop shelves. Many of the company’s goods have been identified as defective or dangerous by customers, resulting in a slew of class action lawsuits.

Class action lawsuits have been filed against a number of companies, including Johnson & Johnson. A class action complaint was launched in June against Unilever for similar dangerous product problems with its Suave haircare products. Mane ‘n Tail products were also included in a class action complaint for chemicals that purportedly caused scalp irritation and other issues.
