Hyundai and U.S. officials reached a settlement in the class action lawsuit filed against Hyundai, which alleged that certain models of its automobiles had defective engines that caused their fuel tanks to rupture and explode when exceeding 120 miles per hour.Hyundai has agreed to resolve a claim by the U.S. Justice Department that it violated the False Claims Act with its use of engine technology in cars sold between 2008 and 2014, which was alleged to have significantly increased fuel consumption. This settlement is the largest ever reached for false claims made by manufacturers under this law and will save taxpayers more than $300 million over 10 years while lowering emissions from Hyundai’s current fleet by up to 70 percent compared with new models introduced after July 1, 2018.,

Consumers who have had issues with their Hyundai Theta engines may be eligible for a recent class action settlement.

Individuals who purchased or leased any of the following Hyundai cars between 2011 and 2019 are eligible for the settlement: 2011–2018 and certain 2019 Hyundai Sonata, 2013–2018 and certain 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport, and 2014–2015, 2018, and certain 2019 Hyundai Tucson automobiles.

A genuine Theta II 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter gasoline direct injection engine must have been installed or changed within OEM specifications in class cars. If the 2019 model year cars were built before the Knock Sensor Detection System technology was put into production, they are eligible.

Some Hyundai cars, according to the plaintiffs in the class action complaint, are prone to engine issues as a result of a flaw. Engine seizure, stalling, engine failure, and engine fire are allegedly among the Hyundai engine issues.

In gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines, the problem is with the connecting rod bearings. These connecting rod bearings, according to the complaint, may fracture and discharge metal debris into the engine oil. Because the oil filter is unable to filter everything out, tainted oil circulates throughout the engine, causing component deterioration until the engine dies suddenly.

The class action complaint stated that when the connecting rod bearings continue to fracture, “the permissible tolerances between the bearings, the connecting rod, and the crankshaft quickly degrade,” ultimately resulting to a “‘knocking’ sound.” The piston may reportedly break through the engine block in certain instances, causing damage to other engine components.

Unfortunately, the plaintiffs allege that Hyundai warranties have regularly refused coverage for similar events. As a consequence, plaintiffs and other car owners are claimed to have suffered financial losses as a result of the problem.

Hyundai has agreed to finance a Hyundai Theta engine settlement center to address claims in a multidistrict litigation and class action lawsuit.
