Who Is Affected by Heartburn Drugs Linked to Stomach Cancer and Kidney Problems?
Did you get stomach cancer or renal issues after using over-the-counter heartburn medications?
Prilosec and Nexium, two popular heartburn medicines, have been related to stomach cancer and renal issues.
Proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, are heartburn medicines that increase the risk of stomach cancer, according to a new Nexium research.
PPIs have also been related to renal issues in a number of recent Nexium investigations. According to one PPI research, individuals who used this class of heartburn medications had a 28 percent higher chance of developing chronic kidney disease.
Patients who use proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec and Nexium had a 96 percent higher risk of kidney failure, also known as renal failure or renal insufficiency, according to another research.
This category includes the following heartburn medications:
- Nexium, Nexium IV, and Nexium 24 HR are all types of Nexium.
- Prilosec OTC, Prilosec
- Prevacid, Prevacid IV, and Prevacid 24-Hour are all antacids.
- Protonix
- Zegerid OTC, Zegerid
You may be eligible for this inquiry if you meet the following criteria:
- You used one of the above-mentioned heartburn medications.
- You were admitted to the hospital due to a kidney damage OR
- You’ve been told you have stomach cancer.
If you or someone you know was prescribed PPIs and had stomach cancer or renal issues as a result, you may be eligible to file a heartburn medication case to recover damages for medical costs, pain and suffering, and other expenses.

PPI Stomach Cancer Study Overview
Heartburn medications like Nexium and Prilosec are linked to an increased risk of stomach cancer, according to a research published in October 2017. This risk rises the longer someone takes these PPI medicines.
According to the research, the risk of Nexium stomach cancer increased by two to eight times depending on how long the medications were used.
The PPI stomach cancer research focused on people who had been treated for a Helicobacter pylori infection, which may lead to stomach ulcers.
According to the Mayo Clinic, more than half of the world’s population may have H. pylori infection and be unaware of it since most individuals exhibit no signs or symptoms.
This bacterium already poses a risk of stomach cancer, but eliminating H. pylori is said to decrease stomach cancer risk by at least 33%.
When utilizing histamine-2 receptors like Zantac and Pepcid as the control, individuals who had H. pylori eradication and used PPI medications had a 43 percent higher chance of getting stomach cancer.
Side Effects of Nexium/Prilosec on the Kidneys
PPIs have been criticized in the past for having severe adverse effects. Nexium and other heartburn medications have been related to renal failure and other kidney issues.
Patients using proton pump inhibitors, such as Prilosec and Nexium, were found to have a high rate of renal issues, according to a research published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
When compared to patients who used other kinds of heartburn medication known as histamine H2 receptor blockers, individuals using these PPI medicines had a 96 percent higher chance of getting kidney failure and a 28 percent higher chance of acquiring chronic kidney disease.
A research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in February 2016 found a connection between PPI medications and chronic renal disease.
Other studies has shown a connection between PPI medications and acute interstitial nephritis, a kidney disease that may progress to kidney failure.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorized a label modification for Nexium in late 2014, adding acute interstitial nephritis to the list of potential Nexium adverse effects.
PPI medications like Nexium and Prilosec are overprescribed, according to the study’s authors, and should only be used for a limited period of time if one is required.
Proton pump inhibitors, such as Nexium and Prilosec, are a kind of heartburn medicine (PPIs). Heartburn, ulcers, and acid reflux are all treated with PPI medications.
Proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec and Nexium have been given to around 15 million Americans. However, since these PPI medications are also available over-the-counter, the overall number of individuals who have taken them is unclear.
You may have a legal claim if you or a loved one took Nexium or Prilosec and were diagnosed with Nexium stomach cancer or renal failure.
