Diabetes Medications Investigation: Flesh-Eating Infections

A recent study found that the use of diabetes medications may increase the risk of developing flesh-eating infections. The findings are concerning given that these medications are typically prescribed to patients with compromised immune systems.

Fournier gangrene is a type of flesh-eating infection that can cause the death of a person. It is caused by bacteria and can be treated with antibiotics.

FDA Issues a Warning Regarding Diabetes Medications

The FDA issued a warning at the end of August 2018 about a family of type-2 diabetes medications known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors being related to instances of necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, commonly known as Fournier’s gangrene, a flesh-eating genital illness.

The disease is uncommon yet severe, according to the government authorities.

The FDA has announced that all type-2 diabetes medicines in the SGLT2 inhibitor class will now be required to include a new warning in the prescription instructions.

The FDA advises diabetic patients who experience discomfort, redness, or swelling of the genitals or the region between the genitals and the rectum to seek medical care right once. Other signs and symptoms include a temperature and a general sense of unwellness.

Diabetes Medications & Flesh-Eating Genital Infections

From March 2013 to May 2018, the FDA received 12 reports from patients who were using SGLT2 inhibitors and were diagnosed with Fournier’s gangrene. In 2013, the first SGLT2 inhibitor was authorized.

The FDA clarified that the 12 instances listed are just those that were reported to the federal agency, implying that there may be additional unreported cases.

Fournier’s gangrene is more prevalent in males, although there were seven men and five women among the 12 cases recorded.

Those who had Fournier’s gangrene after using an SGLT2 inhibitor were all hospitalized, and one of them died. Every patient had surgery, and several of them had numerous operations.

Fournier’s gangrene is a flesh-eating genital illness caused by a bacterial infection of the perineum, which damages the tissue under the skin that includes the muscles, nerves, fat, and blood vessels.

A cut in the skin allows the pathogenic germs to enter the body. It spreads rapidly from there, destroying the diseased tissue.

Fournier’s gangrene is a risk factor for diabetic individuals, although there have only been six instances in over 30 years among patients using other diabetes medications.

Drugs of the SGLT2 inhibitor family are used to treat type 2 diabetes.
