Benzene Lawsuits – Cancer Attorney, Compensation

The term benzene is a toxic chemical that when inhaled can cause cancer. One of the most common lawsuits against companies is for their exposure to this carcinogenic compound. People who were exposed in certain manufacturing plants or by accident have filed these claims, with some success and others not so much.

Benzene exposure settlements are a way for victims of benzene poisoning to get compensation. The victim must have been exposed to the chemical, and there must be evidence that they were at an increased risk for cancer.

Benzene Lawsuits - Cancer Attorney, Compensation

Sunscreen is a popular approach to protect oneself from damaging UV rays, but new data reveals that certain sunscreen lotions may contain benzene, a cancer-causing toxin.

Johnson & Johnson and Merck & Co, the parent company of the affected sunscreen, promoted it as a cancer-deterrent, which makes their conduct all the more reprehensible. When product liability requirements aren’t followed, people throughout the country are exposed to avoidable health risks. You shouldn’t have to doubt the quality of the products on shop shelves, and Morgan & Morgan can assist you in regaining your health.

WHERE DOES BENZENE COME FROM?

Both the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the Environmental Protection Agency have categorized benzene, an industrial chemical, as a carcinogen (EPA). The chemical is hazardous in any form, but it’s extremely deadly when it’s absorbed via the skin, which is what sunscreen is supposed to do. Benzene is classified as a “Class 1 Solvent” by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and its use in the manufacturing of drug ingredients and products is prohibited. Although we’re all exposed to low quantities of benzene via cigarette smoke and automobile exhaust fumes, the chemical’s presence in sunscreen products is much more concerning than our everyday exposure.

IS BENZENE THE ONLY CHEMICAL IN SUNSCREEN THAT IS DANGEROUS?

The FDA has certified oxybenzone, which is often included in sunscreens, to be safe to use. Other environmental organizations, such as the Environmental Working Group (EWG), have raised concerns about the chemical’s safety. While not as acutely toxic as benzene, oxybenzone has been proven to trigger allergic skin responses, operate as an endocrine disruptor, and be hazardous to children. Hawaii prohibited oxybenzone-containing goods in 2021, and other states are expected to follow suit shortly.

Sunscreen is meant to protect you from cancer rather than cause it.
